Travel Nursing – An Attractive New Profession

Nurses can of course work in health care settings and outpatient clinics, which are normally the conventional and traditional places for nurses to work. But with the concept of travel nursing, nurses can work in multiple health care settings. Most importantly, this form of nursing allows nurses to experience the work environment of different hospitals while they render their services.

Travel nursing also ensures nurses don’t get bored working with a single healthcare setting for years together. It is quite natural for nurses to get bored seeing the same faces they report to, time and again, days after days.

There are about 340 Travel Nursing Companies in the U.S, as on 2009 and over 480 Travel Nurse Companies across the globe. Many nurses opt for this career path for various reasons apart from higher salaries and better benefits. Healthcare professionals can see higher professional growth and development and even personal adventure in this particular stream of nursing. And if the nurse is really good at her work, healthcare settings too benefit from her services.

This form of nursing can get physically demanding too, after some time. For example, nurses in this role may be required to travel the length of their state and sometimes, even cross-states. Of course, the money and the benefits associated with the role are too good to resist, but can nurses put up with the stringent travel demands?

With only about 10% nurses opting for this form of nursing, it is clear that travel nursing is not something nurses favor to do. Actually, when nurses enroll for nursing courses, they make up their mind to cut out all adventures from their work role and work profile. So, probably this is more of a mental block in the nurses’ mind than anything else, which presents such a bleak statistic for travel nurses.

Just like conventional nursing, this form of nursing too has benefits for both the nurse and the healthcare setting. The money for travel nurses is quite good, which could be one big plus point for travel nurses. They of course, get to visit many health care settings and render their services. Everything looks positive for a travel nurse, provided she is fine with the demands of travel.
